How to Prepare for a Photo Session with Your Pet

How to Prepare for a Photo Session with Your Pet

Your pet is part of your family! Consider doing a fun family portrait with your pet or just your pet alone. Preparing for a photo session with your pet can be a rewarding experience! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the best results.

Before the Photo Session

  1. Choose the Right Photographer
  • Pet Experience: Pick a photographer who has experience with animals.
  • Style Match: Review their portfolio to ensure their style fits what you’re looking for.
  1. Pick a Comfortable Location
  • Familiar Spaces: Choose somewhere your pet feels safe—your home, backyard, or a quiet park.
  • Lighting Matters: Natural light is ideal for flattering and clear photos.
  • Avoid Crowds: Reduce distractions by avoiding busy places.
  1. Plan the Timing
  • Pet’s Schedule: Choose a time when your pet is typically calm and content (not nap or mealtime).
  1. Grooming & Clean-Up
  • Bath/Brush: Clean and brush your pet a day or two before the shoot.
  • Trim Nails & Eyes: Make sure your pet’s eyes are clear and nails trimmed.
  • Bring Wipes: Especially helpful for tear stains or drool (especially with dogs!).
  1. Props
  • Favorite snacks: Foods that aren’t messy like dry treats or jerky
  • Favorite Toys: Bring their favorites to get their attention or add personality.

Day of the Photo Session

  1. Stay Calm and Patient
  • Animals pick up on your energy. Stay positive and relaxed.
  • Allow breaks if they get overstimulated or tired.
  1. Use Treats and Sounds
  • Squeaky toys, treats, or noises can help get their attention.
  1. Let Their Personality Shine
  • Candid moments are often the best.
  • Don’t force poses—capture your pet doing what they love!
  • Be prepared for the unexpected: Sometimes your pet doesn’t cooperate. It happens!

After the Shoot

  1. Reward Your Pet
  • Give them praise, treats, and love. They earned it!
  1. Print or Share
  • Consider framing your favorites or making photo books.
  • Share on social media with a fun caption and hashtags like #PetPhotography or #PetPortrait. Don’t forget to tag the photographer too!
