Why Fall Is the Perfect Time for Family Photos

Fall is one of the most beautiful—and popular—times of year for family photos. The weather is mild, the light is golden, and the scenery is stunning. With cooler, sunny days, you don’t have to worry about overheating or swatting away bugs, making it comfortable for everyone (especially little ones!).

Nature provides a gorgeous backdrop this time of year: muted tones, changing leaves, and cozy textures everywhere you look. Pumpkin farms, orchards, wineries, and open fields are especially fun locations that add warmth and personality to your photos.

Fashion-wise, fall is all about layers and texture. Chunky sweaters, scarves, boots, and earthy tones always photograph beautifully. Choose a color palette that coordinates without being too “matchy-matchy”—think complementary shades and a mix of neutrals with a few pops of color.

When picking outfits, keep your location in mind. If you’re headed to a pumpkin patch or orchard, skip the high heels and light colors. Choose boots, wedges, or even a cute pair of rain boots—both practical and photogenic.

Fall also happens to be the busiest season for family photographers (including me!). Between the changing colors and families preparing for holiday cards and gifts, autumn is the perfect time for mini photo sessions. It’s the only time of year I offer them.

But above all, remember: the best photos aren’t the perfectly posed ones—they’re the moments that show your family as they truly are. I’ve had parents tell me about tantrums or mishaps on the way to their session, only to message later saying how thrilled they are about seeing how beautiful the photos turned out.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection. Fall is the perfect time to capture that love, laughter, and those fleeting moments that make your family yours.
